1969 Framus Texan 5/196

Framus has an amazing history of making quality stringed instruments, which began in 1946 as highly skilled German luthiers were being expelled from Czechoslovakia after the war, and resettled in the Bavarian region of Germany.

This vintage Framus Texan 5/196 was made in October 1969 in the former West Germany. These acoustic guitars are unique for their bolt on neck (electric guitar style) and for their bolt on bridge with adjustable saddle. When I got this guitar it was in deplorable condition and destined for the dump. I completely disassembled it, replaced broken tuning pegs with vintage original Framus parts, manufactured a new truss rod cover, reset the bridge, re-glued some braces, and properly repaired a crack in the side.

Framus guitars are not loud instruments, but they have a unique and pleasing tone. During the 1960s Framus guitars were the largest selling brand in all of Europe, and many upstart superstars leaned their craft on a Framus. (Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin was originally recorded on a Framus).
